This unique surname is in my family tree and caught my attention, so I stop and check into it whenever I come across Gelpi / Gelpí / Jalpi.
The Gelpi surname comes from the Catalonia region in Spain. Through all of my research, I still have not been able to find the meaning. I will be glad to update this section when I finally find it!
My Gelpi family comes from Puerto Rico and tracing farther back to Blanes, Llagostera, and Tossa in Catalonia, Spain. My research for Spain has taken this family back to the late 1600s. I may be able to continue going back, but it happens little-by-little since it is very time consuming. Personally, the best resource for Puerto Rico has been FamilySearch.org. Without that site, I would not have been able to go much farther than the memories of living relatives. The alternative would be to pay a professional genealogist. It is not a bad option, but it is a very costly option and I am not quite ready to take that route. My Puerto Rico Gelpi ancestors are from the southern part of the island from San German through Ponce.
My Velazquez ancestors come from Peñuelas, Puerto Rico and is difficult to track down the since the surname seems to have been very common in the area.
The Velazquez surname originates in the Basque region of Spain and is related to the surname Velasco.
